“I received a complimentary copy of Sand Dollar for read and review, but this did not affect my review.
I first wish to thank Mr. Cole for the opportunity to read this book. I feel privileged to even have the honor of sharing my thoughts on such a fantastic and masterful creation. I will not do what I normally do which is re-summarize the entire story, no…this is a story that you must read yourself. Then and only then will you have the incredible journey that Mr. Cole takes the reader on. I really do not have enough words in my arsenal to say how lovely, heart wrenchingly beautiful this book was, I am a sucker for romance, and moreso for the undying love element.
The pain, frustration and acceptance that the main character Noah experienced by loving Robin is I do not know…. soul wrenching….
But his perseverance was incredible, and how lucky and sad, I see the tragic figure Robin as, to have and not recognize, what many do not have, someone to love them wholeheartedly, undeserved and unconditionally…
Incredible….
Mr. Cole’s work is exceptional, well written and beautiful, to compare him to Nicholas Sparks is accurate, but I feel that Mr. Cole is and will continue to blaze his own path and leave his own mark as a writer.” — Michelle C. Jordan

“SAND DOLLAR is a wonderfully written story that managed to evoke a range of emotions as I read it. When reading I like to get emotionally connected through a story’s characters and events. By giving me the ability to make those connections, This book provided the escape I anticipate and expect from a really good book.
Sebastian Cole does a remarkably skillful job of developing the main characters of Noah and Robin. They are multidimensional, which I deem an essential component to any great story. The characters in general, are believable as the author reveals idiosyncrasies and flaws that are reasonable and realistic. I also think he captures the essence of what most readers would characterize as the idealized male-female “love” relationship. Something every great romance novel must have.
The messages that are intertwined throughout the book are both meaningful and important. Living a “true” life, feeling life as we experience it, facing and overcoming hardships (both in and out of our control…as well as others) are all personal issues readers know about intimately and deal with and contemplate continually, and this allows the reader to really connect to this work. I liked the writing technique the author incorporated which floats the story in and out of the past. Some authors have difficulty using it without disrupting the story’s flow. Mr. Cole’s writing style made those parts easy to follow. By using that approach in his writing, he added interest and forced me to consciously make connections and think ahead as I read. I also found the story itself to be fluid with a healthy dose of believable twists and just the right amount of fantasy to keep me engaged.
Although this book is labeled as a “romantic fantasy,” I am sure many readers will be able to make personal connections to the storyline. I’ll close by saying I originally looked into purchasing this book because I was made aware of a local connection and had no idea of the premise of the story. Now that I have read it I can say I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of the writing and some of the “enlightening” information I gained by reading it. Pick up SAND DOLLAR. It’s a book that I had a hard time putting down. It is sure to hold your attention and keep you guessing as you read. Be sure to keep the Kleenex handy… and get ready for some big surprises.” — Lisa Ann

I’m the type of guy who believes you can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as you give it your all and don’t give up. So when I decided to write a novel, it didn’t matter to me that I had never done anything like that before. What mattered to me was that I had an amazing story looming in my head, a story that needed to be born. With no experience, training, or education in creative writing, I figured I’d pick up the skills along the way, which is exactly what happened. Besides, I thought, how hard could it be to write a book? Well, I’d soon find out.
What I thought would take a couple of months, took a couple of years. After five months of writing everyplace and everywhere, I finally reached the “finish line” of my manuscript – that magical day when you type, “THE END.” Okay, so I wrote a manuscript; now what? The first thing I did was to copyright it, followed by sending it out to those of my friends who read a lot. This worked out great, providing me with honest feedback in various aspects. Then it was back to rewriting the story, and when I was done, I rewrote some more. Next, I hired a professional to critique the story, who gave me invaluable advice, which meant more rewriting. I soon learned Lesson One in writing: writing is rewriting. There’d always be room for improvement.
By this point in time during this process, I felt that the story had risen to a level of brilliance. But what about my writing style and voice? It needed to be just as good as the best-selling authors’, because they don’t put an asterisk next to your name along with an explanation about your education. So I spent months combing through the manuscript, trying to bring the level of writing up to the level of the story.
When I felt I was ready, I tried soliciting literary agents with a one-page query letter, synopsis, and whatever their submission guidelines called for. Oh, did I mention the Catch 22 in traditional publishing? Apparently, you need a literary agent to get traditionally published. However, in order to get a literary agent, you need to have already been published. So it’s nearly impossible to get an agent unless you’re a famous celebrity, politician, sports figure, etc. Certainly, they’d give me more credence if I had a BFA or MFA in creative writing, which I had not. Like all roads to success, this one’s paved with rejection. And after tons of rejection letters from literary agents, I had a choice to make: give it up or step it up. Since giving up is not really in my vocabulary, I stepped it up.
So I hired an editor, and the first thing she did was to cross off 5,000 unnecessary words. For instance, you shouldn’t write, “run fast.” You should simply write, “run”, because obviously if you’re running, it’s fast. Who knew?? Besides copy-editing, my editor did developmental editing, too, telling me where the story needed to be improved. It was kind of like digging for treasure – she’d tell me where to dig, and I’d come up with something remarkable, as if she knew I had it in me before I ever did. I learned a lot simply by reading her edits and comments, and I became a better writer for it.
I had rewritten the manuscript time and time again for a period of two years, and in the process, I learned how to write. Looking back, I had no idea how long it was going to take or how hard it was going to be. Writing the manuscript, however, was the easy part. Navigating my way to a successful book, now that’s the hard part.
After getting the go-ahead from my editor, I hired a cover artist, designer, and formatter; and I was on my way to self-publishing my first novel, SAND DOLLAR: A Story of Undying Love. Now it was time to find out how good it really was. I set up a website, SebastianColeAuthor.com, entered contests, gave away free books to reviewers, and waited for the reviews to start coming in.
And the results? Well, the reviews have been mostly outstanding, with an average rating of 4.6 stars (out of 5 stars) on Amazon with over 60 reviews. People who have reviewed SAND DOLLAR have even called it the best love story they’ve ever read, with many of them comparing me to Nicholas Sparks. I was also a finalist in ForeWord Firsts debut literary competition for first-time authors. Who knew?!
But my greatest reward lies not in any number or rating. My greatest reward lies in the effect I’ve had on the lives of others through my writing. People who’ve read SAND DOLLAR, especially those who have lost a loved one, feel that the book was written just for them, as if the author expressed in words what they have always felt. One person wrote that the story “touched the very depths of her soul,” and she’ll “cherish the book forever.” She loved the book so much that she even had the book made into earrings!
I only wish more people knew about it so they could read it. I honestly feel the world would benefit, if they only knew… What I need is exposure. But how do I do that? It would be great if I had a YouTube video with millions of hits, or if Oprah were to pick SAND DOLLAR for her book club, but neither is likely to happen at the moment. So I sent out press releases to local newspapers and got a couple of articles written about me. I’ve done several book signings, and I’ve talked at different venues about my experiences. Despite my success, my book is currently only available online, not in bookstores, and very few people have ever heard of me.
So it’s back to the literary agents I go. I’ve somehow made it full circle. But will I have a different result now that SAND DOLLAR has gained traction? Stayed tuned to find out. Regardless of whether or not SAND DOLLAR ever makes it big, touching the lives of others through my writing has been the single most gratifying thing I have ever done in my life. And pursuing my dreams has made all of the difference.
Life’s a journey. I can’t see what lies ahead, but I know one thing for sure: when I look behind, I see the things that I’ve accomplished… and I smile with pride.

Dear Santa,
If you’re looking for a great stocking-stuffer idea for Mom, may I suggest SAND DOLLAR: A Story of Undying Love.

As I pen this letter, however, I realize that your elves must be working double-overtime, attempting to keep up with the outrageous demand for books at this time of year. And I’m sure the last guy they want to hear from is this obscure author, trying to make a name for himself out in little Rhode Island.
So I propose a compromise: let the elves do what they do best — I don’t want to stand in their way, and I’d hate to be responsible, otherwise. And in return, all I ask for Christmas is that you put in a good word for me with your friends at the traditional publishing houses, that’s all. You know, the nice ones — not the naughty ones. I’m sure if you were to explain the situation to them over a cup of eggnog, they’d realize what a tremendous gift SAND DOLLAR would make to the world. And if you’re not sure what to say, here are ten talking points given to me by Susan Rice (see Naughty list):

1) With over 60 reviews on Amazon, SAND DOLLAR has an average rating of 4.6 stars (out of 5 stars). Click here
2) Some people who have reviewed SAND DOLLAR have even called it the best love story they’ve ever read, Click here
3) with many of them comparing me to Nicholas Sparks. Click here
4) What’s interesting is that people who’ve read SAND DOLLAR, especially those who have lost a loved one, feel that SAND DOLLAR was written just for them, as if the author expressed in words what they have always felt.
5) And what’s consistent throughout the reviews is that the surprise ending was amazing, it was well written, they couldn’t put the book down (because of the numerous twists and turns and reveals), you should keep a box of Kleenex handy (perhaps the book should be packaged with one), the cover is beautiful, and they can’t wait to read another book by the author.
6) In case you don’t already know, SAND DOLLAR is an epic, heart-wrenching love story about “the one who got away”. It’s a romantic fantasy, kind of like THE NOTEBOOK with a SIXTH SENSE twist. Similar to a Nicholas Sparks novel, but uniquely different, SAND DOLLAR is a suspenseful, thought-provoking, and emotional read that, among other things, might have you yelling at the main characters at times. Written by a man, the raw emotion expressed from the man’s point of view has great appeal to its female audience, who perhaps inwardly seeks such a man.
7) Also, an interesting phenomena is that people from around the world are starting to quote me on social media sites. Apparently, some of the words I’ve written have touched them profoundly. Click here
8) In addition, SAND DOLLAR was a finalist in the ForeWord Firsts literary competition. Click here
9) And people are starting to take notice. Click here for an article written about me in a local newspaper, and click here for a Q & A.
10) If all else fails, then look no further than the hearts and souls of those who’ve read SAND DOLLAR, lives forever touched by an unforgettable story of undying love. It’s where you’ll find all the words you’ll need to make the most convincing argument.

“I have never interviewed a writer–or anyone for that matter–who embodies the term “hopeless romantic” as much as Sebastian Cole. He is kind. He is self-deprecating, and yes, hopeless when it comes to talking about love. And I mean that in the most complimentary sense of the word. There is a genuine absence of cynicism, a love of life–and of love–that comes through when he discusses the journey of writing his first novel SAND DOLLAR: A Story of Undying Love.
SAND DOLLAR is an epic love story about “the one who got away.” A man on his deathbed describes his life of love and loss to a wise orderly, only to discover a far greater truth about the past, present, and future. The book has been nominated as finalist in the ForeWord Firsts debut literary competition for first-time authors. Reviewers have compared Cole’s writing to Nicholas Sparks, best-selling author of The Notebook, who also happens to be Cole’s favorite author.
I sat down with Mr. Cole, a native Rhode Islander and graduate of Brown University, for a chat about what it was like to pen his debut novel.” — Barrington Patch

“I finally finished reading, “Sand Dollar”, and I really enjoyed it! There were so many unexpected turns in this story, and as I approached the end of the book, I found myself planning to read the book again from the beginning. There are revelations in in the later chapters which give a deeper meaning and understanding to it’s earlier chapters.
Although I’m familiar with many different psychological disorders, I had very little knowledge or understanding of ***** before reading this book. This book will be a huge encouragement, not only for those who suffer with the disorder, but also for friends and family members.
“I Will Be Here,” by Steven Curtis Chapman, is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, and I’m so glad it was used as the theme song of this story. I hope there will some day be a movie, and that this will be the theme song! Sadly, I have only heard this song at Christian weddings, and I find it unfortunate that it has not become very well known in secular realms. I hope that this book will bring it to a new level of popularity. This concept of steadfast love, in the face of hardship, is a relatively unknown mindset in our self-centered world. This book is a great lesson in how to be steadfast in the face of adversity.
I especially loved the author’s notes at the end of the book. It made the book feel much more real to me. I found it difficult at first to related to such a perfect fairytale ending, but it was very easy for me to relate to Noah’s hopes and dreams for a fairytale ending. I also loved how the author made God such a constant and attainable companion to Noah. God was faithful, despite Noah’s lack of faith, and this is a beautiful revelation of how God desires relationship with each of us.
Although most readers will probably not agree with me, I absolutely LOVE Noah’s mom, Miriam!! She’s got tons of character flaws, but that’s what made her so genuine. Great character development there. I think, of all the characters in the book, she was the most real to me. I could really picture her, hear her voice.
I also loved how the author put his acknowledgements at the end of the book. So many writers put them at the beginning, but it’s usually only after reading a book that we are interested in hearing more about who it was that made such significant contributions to the author’s life and project. The artwork on both the front cover and the back is absolutely gorgeous, and it was THE selling feature that first hooked me. From there, the writing was all that the cover promised it to be. I look forward to reading more from Sebastian Cole.” — Marjorie Savoie

Paperback, 223 pages
Published May 1st 2012 by Sebastian Cole LLC
Genre: contemporary novel, romance, romantic fantasy
Rating : 5 stars
“What an exquisitely romantic story! Utterly heart-wrenching in its tragedy, absolutely gratifying in its resolution. Far from being a mellow romance novel, the author deepened and enriched the shadows of widely exploited tropes (lost love and second chances) with more introspective and dramatic tones, tragic elements and a mind-blowing ending. Although frequently referred to as a romantic fantasy, I wouldn’t say that Cole’s soulful debut novel falls in that clear-cut category, being the otherworldly element not a dominant feature throughout the narration, as much as an imaginative touch that the author used very lightly and that found its culmination only at the end of the book.
Lying in a hospital bed, eighty year old Noah Hartman offers to a compassionate medical orderly a bitter-sweet recount of his love life. As past events and present-time regretful considerations unfold in front of our eyes with the fluidity, accuracy and comfortable pace of a movie script, Noah takes us for an emotional trip down memory lane, leading the readers through his heartbreaking quest for love and the countless obstacles that external forces, prejudices, and twists of fate placed on his path to happiness. What makes this story of undying love so poignant and inspiring is the combination of two very fragile and vibrant characters and the incredible resiliency of their mutual feelings. I was overwhelmed with a deep sense of compassion for Noah and Robin. Their back-stories may be marked by environmental and genetic traits that will act as invisible and sometimes unexplained forces against the fulfillment of their love (Noah’s Jewish background and family’s hostility to Robin, Robin’s tragic past and lack of emotional stability), but true love has a way to reveal itself in “a moment of truth and clarity” and to lead two soul mates through the storms and the rough seas, like a compass to its true north.
Keep a tissue box close by while reading this evocative novel…Sand Dollar won’t leave your soul and your eyes dry.” — Mina’s Bookshelf

Many thanks to Frank Burns for the following review:
“This is Sebastian Cole’s debut novel and a first foray into the world of becoming a published author. He is a native of New England in the USA, and it is clear that this narrative draws greatly on personal experience. It was my privilege to receive a signed courtesy copy of SAND DOLLAR directly from the author, so it would be discourteous of me not to share a few thoughts about it.
Without giving a summary of the plot (an aspect of book reviewing I try to avoid), let me tell you some important areas of life that SAND DOLLAR elaborates. First of all, it roughly fits into the genre of Romantic Tragedy, with a heavy bias towards Fantasy. All of which means that, throughout its dénouement, especially during the emotionally charged scenes, you have to constantly do ‘reality checks’. Nothing wrong with that; just remember that some of the events are unlikely to happen in the real world.
The narrative takes you into the world of a rich Jewish family, proud of its ancestry and covetous of its progeny and its legacy. It follows the age-old storyline of rich boy meets poor girl, falls hopelessly in love, which leads to much pain, anguish, passion and suffering as the story progresses. The reader may be enlightened (as I was) about a little known syndrome which fundamentally underpins the broken relationships within the novel. And for those who have never encountered the phenomenon ‘out of body, near death experience’, there is an interesting twist on this in the context of the protagonist, Noah, whom we see as an eighty year old, lying on a hospital bed, recounting the story of his life.
Noah’s life is like a journey, indeed, almost like a pilgrimage. His love life has a definitive start when he meets Robin, but his relationship with her is a journey, a long tortuous journey of overcoming obstacles, climbing mountains of pain, descending into valleys of joy, only to eventually arrive at a destination that was all to familiar to him: that he loved Robin to the point that he couldn’t imagine life without her.
I would not choose to read romantic fiction as a matter of course, but I would recommend this narrative most heartily because it touches on the theme of life being a journey, the start and the end of which is not of our choosing, but the duration of which challenges us at every step to make the right the decisions for ourselves, and those around us. And at the end of the journey, we arrive at an all too familiar place.
Let me quote T.S.Eliot from his Quartet ‘Little Gidding’:
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”

★★★★★ Sand Dollar
“The Sand Dollar was the 1st book in many years that I finished from start to finish. It kept me intrigued until the very last page!! The book was very well written and so heartfelt. I experienced a range of emotions from crying to laughing. My only disappointment is that I finished the book and can longer be intertwined within Robin and Noah’s love story 🙂 I am looking forward to Sebastian’s next masterpiece! I definitely recommend this book to all the romantics out there!!!”
